Just outside Doncaster, an hour’s drive away from the city of York, you will find that this sprawling green countryside is home to a unique attraction that makes for a thrilling family day out. On your next family trip to York, make sure to indulge in a day trip and walk on the wild side at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

About Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened in 2009, and has quickly become one of the most exciting places to visit in the region, winning the prestigious ‘Yorkshire’s Most Magnificent Attraction’ award in 2012. Conservation and animal welfare play a big part in the work of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. They join forces with communities around the world to help save wildlife, and create pioneering habitats for the park’s animal residents. Their dynamic animal enclosures also mean that visitors to Yorkshire Wildlife Park can get up close with the animals.

Walk with the animals

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is home to a number of big cats, who enjoy space and care in their creative habitats. The ‘Lion Country’ gives you a unique chance to enjoy a safe safari into the reserves which are home to these prowling predators. ‘Leopard Heights’ is another unique area, and you can view the spotted felines from a spectacular viewing tower. The innovative ‘Land of the Tiger’ is home to endangered Amur tigers, and visitors can watch from a special walkway as the great cats enjoy their habitat of pools and a waterfall.

Three species of loveable lemurs can be found in ‘Lemur Woods’, where they can often be seen playing among the trees. Zebra, antelope and other animals roam together in ‘Into Africa’, with a state of the art enclosure housing the park’s giraffes.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is also home to squirrel monkeys, baboons, a giant anteater, flamingos, hunting dogs, and many more animals. Younger visitors will especially enjoy visiting the ‘Wallaby Walkabout’ woodland trail and the world farm.

Everyone’s favorite mammals, a cheeky mob of meerkats, are also in residence at the park. In fact, their manor has been built to perfectly recreate the harsh South African landscape of their natural habitat and support their thriving survival.

We recommend you take a look the park map and activities timetable to best plan your trip in advance – there are ranger talks, handling sessions and feeding times through the day, and special events are often advertised on the website.

There refreshment facilities at the park where you can enjoy food and drink, like hot meals, tea and coffee in the ‘Safari Café’, or South American snacks in ‘¡Caramba!’ The aptly named ‘Monkey Play House and Café’ is a great place to have lunch with children, as they can scramble around a wooden play area while you eat. Complete your visit with a trip to the park’s shop, the Safari Store, and take home a souvenir at the end of your day.
